A few days later, coronavirus (COVID-19) disease out-broke at Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province. My hometown is Jingmen, Hubei, which is about three hours away from Wuhan. Since the Chinese New Year's eve (Jan.24), we had complied with the local government calls, not leaving the house for nearly half a month. The whole city of Jingmen had been closed to all traffic means, including buses, highways, railways, airports, etc. I was extremely worried about when I could return to Canada. Hearing of the Canadian government's evacuation plan, I quickly contacted the Canadian Evacuation Center (Emergency Surveillance and Response Center) in Ottawa. I embarked on the first evacuation flight within a few days. Our flight of evacuees landed at Air Force Base (CFB) Trenton where we were quarantined for two weeks. I believe that this kind of experience must only happened once in a century, and it will not happen again in my lifetime. The following sections are specially written to record this quarantine journey. Included are group photos of Wuhan city during the shut-down period.
到武漢天河機場<span style="font-family: PingHei, "PingFang SC", "Microsoft YaHei", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(To Wuhan Tianhe Airport)

<span style="font-family: PingHei, "PingFang SC", "Microsoft YaHei", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

A few days before the departure, I was working with the Evacuation Center, by both email and phone, to confirm my identity, using personal and driver information. Although the Canadian Consulate would provide foreign affairs notes, it was still my own responsibility to arrange the trip from Jingmen to Wuhan Tianhe Airport.

Initially, the first evacuation flight was scheduled to arrive at Tianhe Airport before 8 pm Beijing time on February 5th, but was later postponed to 5 pm on February 6th due to scheduling reasons. On February 6th, it started snowing early in the morning. After lunch at around 12 pm, I took a short break. At about 1 pm, I said goodbye to my mother and brother's family. Since I had the out-of-city pass from Jingmen Foreign Affairs Office, there was no trouble leaving the city by the expressway. It is worth mentioning that, because all cities in Hubei Province were closed, without a pass it would have been impossible to drive the car out of the community parking lot, let along drive anywhere else.

After a two-and-a-half-hour drive on the highway, we reached the urban area of Wuhan. Due to the need for epidemic control, the most direct route to the Tianhe Airport was closed. The driver had to find another way to get there. The weather was gloomy with a heavy mix of snow and rain. No pedestrians were on the roads. The whole of Wuhan city was desolate and silent, just like the poem Wuhan Is Crying written by Leng Junliang, "The sky is raining, Wuhan is crying." The scene was apocryphal. Wuhan, a metropolis of over 10 million people, directly connecting with nine provinces, and yet ever so quiet and deserted!

We arrived at Tianhe Airport at about 4:30 in the afternoon. After entering the airport, the staff quickly led me to the waiting room to queue for registration. Some Canadian Embassy staff (7 or 8 people) from Beijing were there already to answer questions, check passports, measure body temperature and distribute customs forms, etc. Because it was an epidemic and an evacuation flight, there were many forms to be filled in, and the security check was particularly strict. By the time all the procedures were completed, it was over 9 pm, and I finally entered the terminal to wait for the flight.

The airport terminal was very quiet. There were no other passenger flights besides the evacuation plane that we were waiting for. The heating in the waiting hall was off. It was a bit cold inside and I had to walk back and forth and drink hot water from a fountain to keep warm. We started boarding at almost 1 am, as the Canadian doctors checked each passenger's temperature and distributed masks. Because it was an evacuation plane, no flight tickets being purchased in advance, each seat was temporarily arranged by a flight attendant when boarding. They proceeded in simple sequential order from back to front, family groups or friends being assigned seats together. The following pictures are group photos from Wuhan Airport.

返加一路行程<span style="font-family: PingHei, "PingFang SC", "Microsoft YaHei", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(Flight Back to Canada)

<span style="font-family: PingHei, "PingFang SC", "Microsoft YaHei", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">

I was very tired after the long day, weary from interminable waiting and process, and fell asleep soon after boarding the plane. I don’t know the exact departure time. It was probably around 2:30 in the morning. There might have been five or six children under the age of four on-board. When the plane took off, some children fussed, unwilling to wear masks. They cried unhappily for the first half-hour. I totally understood since these kids were too young. They couldn’t understand the terrible frightening coronavirus despite their parent’s explanations. Fortunately, the flight attendants gave the children with some small toys, and the kids slowly quieted down.
。?lt;div>Before boarding the flight, I guessed the flight crew would have been assembled hastily. I was not even sure whether the plane would have food or drinks. Only when I got on the plane did I realize that everything was almost the same as the arrangements on a commercial flight. With the exception that the attendants distributed new masks and measured the body temperature every three hours, they supplied sufficient meals, drinks and boiling water as would be expected. The service was very professional. Later, I was told that the flight attendants actually came from the air force base! It proved that the organizers of the evacuation were very thoughtful! After completing the simple customs procedures, we then had one-on-one interviews with members of the Red Cross, mainly concerning a brief introduction to the quarantine environment, psychological counselling, and the distribution of some daily necessities such as masks, gloves and so on. After that, a varied breakfast was prepared for us. Chatting with the reception staff, I learned that the very building which now provided our reception was that used to test the performance of aircraft at the air force base and that the reception staff had started to arrange the scene at 3 am in the morning! Let's briefly talk about this routine.

There were three quarantine buildings with close to 400 people in quarantine and each building had a different time period for the ONE hour walk. In fact, each building had three time periods for a walk, but because it was normally quite cold in the morning and evening time slots, few people went out walking then. Most people went for a walk during the noontime. The quarantine guidance required everyone to take a mask when going out for a walk, and it was better to be separated by more than two meters, even between friends and family members.

The TWICE temperature measurement was done once around 11 am in the morning and again at 3pm in the afternoon. The medical staff were changed about every three days. There were all very nice and professional!

。?lt;div>I would say that those THREE meals were the most difficult thing to do for nearly 400 people. The quantity was plenty and the quality was great! The chef team did a lot of thinking to ensure that we had nutritional balance and the food was in line with our taste! Thank you very much!
