They hunt or feed during the night, and sleep during the day. </p><p><b>Diurnal animals</b>日間動(dòng)物 do it the other way around.</p><p>Scientists sometimes use the word crepuscular黃昏的 to describe nocturnal animals that are not active when it is very dark at night; they are mostly active near <b>dawn, dusk</b>, and sometimes when the moon makes a lot of light.</p><p>Nocturnal animals also have a high sensitivity to their eyes, and when flashed really brightly with lights appear red, orange, amber琥珀色, or topaz黃玉色.</p> <p><b>Bats are nocturnal (active at night).</b></p><p>Bats ‘see’ in the dark using a special skill called <b>echolocation</b>回波定位能力. Bats make noises and wait for the sound waves to bounce back off objects (an echo反射), if it doesn’t bounce back then they can safely fly forward. Print the Nocturnal and Diurnal Animal printables and laminate if desired. </p><p>Print the Sun and the Moon Sorting Sheets. </p><p>Laminate the sorting sheets if desired and place them in one folder pocket. </p><p>Cut out the animals and place them in the manila envelope labeled "Animals." </p><p>Place the envelope in the other folder pocket. </p><p>Print the cover sheet and glue it to the front of the folder.</p><p>2. Discuss what it means for an animal to be nocturnal. </p><p>Explain, or have another child explain, that nocturnal animals are awake and busy at night and sleep during the day. </p><p>Then, introduce the word diurnal. </p><p>Explain that this is the word used to describe animals, such as humans, that are awake and busy during the day and sleep at night. </p><p>3. Demonstrate the activity to the child. Unfold and flatten out the sun and the moon sorting sheets on the floor or a large table or hang on the board. </p><p>Then, spread out the animal cards. </p><p>Explain that the object of the activity is to sort animals that are awake during the day onto the sun and animals that are awake during the night onto the moon. </p><p>Complete the activity as a group and review the name of each animal on a card.</p><p>4.
