Slumdog Millionaire came out in 2006, but it is still a hot movie today. The movie talks more than what we can say. It is not only about love, brotherhood but also talks about deep meaning of life.

The main character, Jamal, had a very hard and poor life when he was little. His mom was killed in a religious fight, leaving little Jamal and his brother Salim orphans. Two poor little brothers and another orphan, a little girl called Latika were living in the trash heaps. They have no clothes to wear, no food to eat, no room to live in. In the day time, they were looking for food in the trash and in the night, they slept there. They were wearing ragged clothes with unkempt hair and dirty faces. They were exactly beggars.

One day, a few men came to the trash heaps, who looked like gentlemen, and took some poor children to their home, providing nice food and room for them. Jamal thought they were so lucky to meet such kind people. However, those "gentlemen” were bad people, who made money by forcing those children to beg or steal in the street. Even worse, they were so merciless that they made some children disabled, like being blind or lame. After witnessing their rascality(惡行), Jamal escaped from devil's claws with his brother Salim' help. Unluckily, Latika was left behind when two brothers climbed up onto the train. Seeing Latika disappear in the distance, Jamal, on the train, was heart-broken and he swore to himself that he would come back to save Latika some day.

After that, the two brothers drifted (漂流)

from place to place homeless and miserable. The two boys made a living by travelling on top of trains, selling goods, picking pockets, and pretending to be tour guides at the Taj Mahal. During those hard times, Jamal never forgot Latika. He insisted they go back to find her. At last, they went back and found Latika. In order to help Latika out of the devil's claw, Salim shot the bad man to death. They ran away with Latika. However, To Jamal's surprise, his brother also pointed at him with the gun and asked him to leave without taking Latika away.

From then on, the two brothers went to different directions. Salim wanted money and power, but Jamal only wanted to be with his love. Salim became one of the hatchet men(打手) of the local powerful Gangster(黑幫) but Jamal worked as a servant from one place to another. They were out of touch for many years. But Latika was always in Jamal's heart.

Years later, he got in touch with his brother by chance and got to know Latika became the woman of the Gangster. He expected to take her away but it was impossible. Later, he got to know Latika enjoyed watching a TV program called So you want to be a millionaire?

In the program, whoever answers the questions will get some amount of prize, and the more questions, the more prize. Jamal signed up for it and unbelievably got questions right and won a lot of prize, which made the host angry and called the police, because the host didn't believe those difficult questions could be solved by Jamal, an orphan without any education backgrounds. After harsh interrogation(審問), Jamal reflected back his life and told the police all the answers were from his miserable and special life experiences. The police was convinced that he was innocent and realized that he was not in it for the money, and allowed him to return to the show for the final question. At last, Jamal won the highest prize.

Salim knew Jamal won the huge prize from TV. He was moved by his brother's "never-give up”spirit. His kindness woke up so he decided to help Jamal be with Latika together. At last, Salim shot the Gangster to death and at the same time he was killed, covered with a lot of money in the bathtub.

At the end of the movie Jamal and Latika met at the railway station, sharing a kiss and lived happily ever after.

Why did Jamal have a good ending, just like the endings of Anderson's Fairy Tales? I think that's what the movie wants to talk about. Jamal was a kind and brave boy always with love and “never-give up” in his heart however miserable and difficult life he had. He never changed his belief whatever happened. At last, good luck walked to him. To the contrary, his brother went to the opposite way, of course he had a sad ending. Luckily, at the last moment, his kindness woke up and he realized love and domestic affections were the most important in life, so he sacrificed himself and helped Jamal achieve his life.

The movie cleverly combines the romantic of being Anderson's Fairy Tales with the critique of the real Indian world, which makes the audience cry and laugh, angry and relieved, keep on ruminating.

Probably, that's what a good movie has to have and why the audience are still fond of it today.
