But in today’s world of abundance, the very conditions that once ensured our survival now leave us soft, sick, and spiritually adrift. True vitality isn’t found in prolonged comfort—it’s forged in the ongoing pursuit of challenge and growth.

Where we once battled hunger, disease, and predators, we now grapple with depression, obesity, and a loss of meaning. Comfort, once a hard-won reward, has become a toxin—evidence of a species drifting from its natural design.

Meaning flourishes in difficulty, not in ease and comfort. Like algae in a sunlit spring, contentment thrives in desire, challenge, effort, pursuit, and the process of realization—not in unearned abundance. Too many were spared the struggle, robbed of their grit, but all can be reclaimed.

So seek discomfort. Introverts: join the party. Extroverts: sit with silence. Travel where you'd usually avoid. Stop thinking the world owes you—offer something instead. Stop whining and be grateful for small things, like the food in your stomach. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Aim to build a comfortable life—but don’t live in it. The soul rusts in still water. Better your character be hardened by the storm.

10

Learn Not to Be Reliant on ANYTHING

True freedom isn’t found in having stuff—it’s in not needing your stuff.

Nature has ensured that we will always be dependent—think air, food, and shelter. But beyond the physical body’s requirements, ask yourself: is it you who wields control over your desires, behaviour, and possessions, or do they have the upper hand over you?

During our trips abroad, I frequently see kids glued to their phones and tell them, “Go out and explore the markets, wander the alleys, watch life unfold.” After all, we visit fascinating and exotic places they’ve never been to. And they reply, “But we don’t have any money.”

Money? You don’t need money to be curious. You don’t need screens to experience wonder. You don’t need anything except a curious eye, a sense of adventure, a desire to learn—or at minimum, an ounce of appreciation. But they’ve forgotten, or never learned, how to create joy from nothing. Just reliant—and trapped.

Learn to need nothing. The less you rely on, the freer you are. Whatever you use to escape difficulty, discomfort, or reality, eventually owns you.

?

11

Don’t Look for Answers, Look for Opportunities

You don’t know the answers because you don’t yet know the question.

Most people have no clue where they’re going—and if they do, things often look very different by the end. So, it’s futile and redundant to try having all the future answers. What you do need, however, is direction. A man without direction is as good as a willow in the desert.

Seek opportunity at every turn. Arm yourself with a wide range of experiences. Be bold and creative; be diligent and open-minded, and wait for what happens. When the time calls, you’ll know what to draw from. You’ll be flexible when necessary. You’ll be able to set your sails to the shifting wind.

Seek opportunities for future investment and diversification. The answers will be found in your experiences.

12

Go Backpacking For A Few Years

This is revolutionary—on a personal level.

It may sound grand, crazy, and expensive to backpack around the world for a few years, but I assure you, it isn’t—not when you learn what, where, when, and how. A few years is enough to shake the very foundations of everything you thought you knew and believed. It will leave you humbled, with more questions than answers.

It will change everything: your perceptions on life, yourself, the world, society, humanity, the present, the past, the future. Your entire reality will be turned upside down and your fears and dreams will evolve.

Cultural restraints? Irrelevant—by then you have forged your own culture, through exposure to countless others. Psychological restraints? The world has already crushed them down to manageable size. Nature and human diversity, beauty and suffering, will shape you who become.

To know the world is the best cure for dissolving illusions. To know yourself is the highest gift attainable. Five years backpacking—slow-paced, on the backroads, following the suggestions in this three part essay—will reveal what matters. There are many things to learn. The slow speed will teach you quick. The backroads will bring you to the forefront.

So, pick up a bag and pack it light. Go out alone, mind open wide. Strive. Suffer. Ponder. Come face to face with the raw essence of life—the pulse of the world, the depth of humanity and the truth of your own being. Uncomfortable—and free. Seek not comfort, but experience. Not answers, but meaning. Not ease, but growth.

Go backpacking around the world for a few years.

How Can You Benefit From Our Trips

After more than a decade of backpacking and observing young people around the world, Kel brings a unique perspective to youth development.
