It is once renowned as the strongest fortress in the kingdom and second only to Lisbon in importance in the country. <br><br>The name originates in the legend of martyred Saint Iria, who was killed in Tomar for refusing to break her vow of chastity and her body was thrown into the river, eventually drifting to the shore of Santarém. The current clock tower dates back to the mid-15th century. It was built from a defensive structure surrounding the Porta do Alpor?o.<br><br>The name "das Caba?as" became popular at the end of the 18th century, due to the placement of eight clay gourds on an iron structure supporting a large bronze bell, cast in 1604. It is located in the south-east district of the city of Santarém. From here, you can see Almeirim, Alpiar?a and part of the meadowland crossed by the River Tagus.<br><br>At the time of the Christian Reconquest (12th century), this was one of the eight gates leading to the city of Santarém. The section of wall here is the best-preserved part of the defensive line, although it is also possible to find some remains of this same wall at the Fonte das Figueiras and the Torre das Caba?as.
