With a long history and unique style, paper cutting is deeply loved by people all around the world. It is the art of cutting paper into different shapes. It first appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty, more than a thousand years ago. Paper cutting is not only popular in China, but also in other countries. It sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The skill of paper cutting is to use scissors or knives to cut out different shapes. The most common patterns are flowers, animals and shapes from Chinese history. They are then put on windows, doors, walls and lanterns as decorations. Paper cutting is also often used to make paper decorations for traditional Chinese festivals and weddings, as symbols of wishes for good luck. On New Year’s Day, people paste paper-cuts on windows for decoration to mark the end of the old year and wish for a happy new year. Paper cutting is used to decorate all kinds of articles and indoor furniture for wedding ceremonies. Generally, paper-cutting is placed on tea sets, soap boxes and other daily necessities, and can be pasted on mirrors as well. The flowers patterns for weddings mainly represent good luck and happiness.
