After her uncle was taken away by the police, Yi Qing'e wilted like a frostbitten eggplant, noticeably more listless than before. For a while, she felt like she was burning up every day. Her hands trembled, her legs shook, and her heart pounded. She couldn't eat, and she couldn't sleep at night. Already thin, she became even more emaciated, like a dried-up bundle of firewood. She often heard people say to her, "This chicken-boned bastard, why hasn't he been cleaned up yet?" Yi Qing'e didn't know what "bastard" meant at first. Later, she heard that "bastard" was a Guanzhong dialect word for "head." "Chicken-boned bastard" meant someone with a large head and small body, disproportionate, and of poor quality. Teacher Hu Caixiang said that those who spoke ill of her were people her uncle had offended in the past. She could just let it go in one ear and out the other. Anyway, she didn't associate with these people. But facing her classmates, she still had to endure the burning pain of being pricked by wheat awns several times a day.

In the earthquake-resistant tent, she was squeezed into the very edge of the bunk; she was the first one to sleep there upon entering. One night, even the dog from the yard ran in and licked her face. She didn't dare to shout, because she felt she wasn't worthy to shout. Shouting would only bring more scornful looks. When the night was deep and quiet, she could see the stars and moon through the gaps in the curtain. Looking at the stars and moon, thinking of her parents, the sheep, and her uncle who had been tied up with ropes, she couldn't sleep night after night. She had no energy for her daytime practice, and sooner or later she lived in a daze. She could feel her classmates pointing and whispering behind her back all day. Her uncle's arrest by the police felt like it meant she had been arrested too. No one shared a bunk with her anymore. No one ate with her anymore. No one wanted to practice with her anymore. Even when she did the splits, her legs were weak, and she was always the one to take the blame for others; no one wanted to sit next to her anymore. It was as if she was filthy. Even the bowls for eating and the cans for drinking water were not only untouched, but people were also reluctant to put them together. Meanwhile, other students would often share food from the same bowl and grab water from the same bottle.

She wanted to go back to her room alone, even if it meant being crushed to death by the earthquake, but the teacher wouldn't allow it. But the teachers seemed to know them all too well.

Soon, dozens of people gathered in the courtyard, banging drums and gongs. Unfortunately, her uncle wasn't there. The drum, as big as a millstone, was being banged by someone who had pointed at her uncle and cursed him at the criticism meeting. Others were writing large characters. The characters bore the names of the four people, all marked with a red cross. Then the characters were pinned to a horizontal banner. Meanwhile, all the actors were rehearsing in the earthquake-resistant tent. They were rehearsing a Yangko dance, chanting in unison:

"A nationwide celebration! Chu Jiahe and Feng Xiaoxiao were even in the lead dance group. Some who weren't assigned to dance were given flags to carry. Some said, "This 'chicken-bone horse' (ugly as hell ) is better off not going out to carry a flag; it's a disgrace to the troupe. Let her stay home and watch the house."
